It was the second and final one to feature Snowy White on lead guitar. Now, there are those who will decry this album as being a comparatively minor part of the Lizzy Catalogue. But that is to do an injustice to a record that has some outstanding moments. Opening song ‘Angel of Death’ is a vibrant, fiery song which was released as a single in America, and became something of a cause celebre with latter-day metal bands, at least two of whom have covered it. It was also something of a blueprint for what was to follow for Lizzy on ‘Thunder And Lightning’ ‘Hollywood (Down On Your Luck)’ has some typically to the point lyrics from Phil Lynott, while the title track itself is another thrusting anthem, Co-Produced by Chris Tsangarides, it showed that Lizzy were prepared to rise to the challenges offered by a new decade, and refused to be cowed by the arrival on the the scene of some young, hot bands who were out to make their mark. ‘Renegade’ tells of a band who stood proudly for what they believed in, and still had so much to offer, not just to old school fans, but also to a younger generation who were just the beginning to test the waters of their rock excitement. More than 30 years down the line, ‘Renegade’ represents a period when Lizzy might have been in transition, but were still capable of making great music. During those five years in between recordings, he accelerated his development as electric bass phenom and enthralling concert attraction in Weather Report, the premier fusion band of the day. While challenging dominant leader and synth maestro Joe Zawinul on a nightly basis, Jaco also brought to the band such memorable tunes as “Teen Town,” “Havona,” and “Punk Jazz.” Word of Mouth was crafted on a much larger canvas than any of Jaco’s previous works, more beholden to Stravinsky and Bach than James Brown and Wayne Cochran. And while his bass virtuosity is apparent on Bach’s “Chromatic Fantasy,” the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” and his cathartic “Crisis,” it’s the gorgeous orchestral rendering of his poignant waltz, “Three Views of a Secret,” the suite-like “John and Mary,” and the jaunty “Liberty City” that most impress here. Guest soloists include Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Toots Thielemans. Originally released in July of 1981, Word of Mouth was Jaco’s first post-Weather Report album.
